How to choose an aquarium fish?

Choose your aquarium fish : a large number of fish, each as colorful because the next, are available in pet stores. But not all species are suitable for all aquariums: to make sure to create the proper choice, there are some things to contemplate.

That’s it! Your aquarium is finally ready and balanced, now it is time to introduce the primary fish. But to create different species cohabit successfully requires an honest reflection. the way to choose them well? What are the mistakes you must not make?

Criteria to be taken under consideration
The size of the aquarium and also the social behaviour of the fishes

The fish you see in pet stores are usually small. But beware! they’re juvenile individuals, and a few species have a awfully large adult size. A goldfish can reach over twenty centimeters for instance. Moreover, some fish don’t grow abundantly, but must sleep in groups to feel safe. Therefore, one must confine mind the amount of water required by the college of fish, and not only the reduced size of a personal. To avoid overpopulation, as a rule of thumb, one liter of real water is counted per centimetre of adult fish. the important volume is that the volume of the aquarium minus the space occupied by gravel, filtration and decorations.

Water parameters

Not all fish have the identical tolerance to the various physico-chemical parameters of the water. The species you’ll put in your aquarium depend directly on the pH and hardness of your tank. If you have got H2O with an occasional pH, South American species like neon and grouse are suitable. On the contrary, if your water is difficult with a basic pH, prefer Asian fish, like guppies, mollys or platys.

Most small exotic fish require water at 24-25°C, which is typically above temperature. If your aquarium isn’t equipped with a heating plant, you must address cold-water species like goldfish or China sails.

The a part of the aquarium occupied by fish

Some species live at the underside of the aquarium (Corydoras, botias, loricarids…), others within the middle (bearded, danios…), et al still within the upper part (hatchet fish, freshwater butterfly fish…). To avoid a too important proximity and to stay the entire of your tank occupied, you need to associate fishes colonizing all the levels: benthic, open water and surface species.

Gradually increase the quantity of fish

When you put the primary fish in your aquarium, it’s essential to travel gradually. Indeed, the biological process has been founded and a balance has been created in your tank, but without animals. If you add an excessive amount of all directly, the bacteria that have grown in your filter won’t be ready to deal with their many wastes, and a deadly nitrite spike could occur. Ideally you must start by introducing some hardy cleaner fish, like Corydoras, before moving on to other species. Always wait one to 2 weeks between groups of fish, which should never exceed a median of 5 to 10 individuals (depending on the scale of the fish and therefore the volume of your aquarium).

Impossible associations

In addition to species requiring incompatible physico-chemical conditions, certain associations are systematically to be avoided. Never mix very small species with very large ones: an outsized predatory fish may hunt and eat smaller individuals. Likewise, never make territorial and aggressive species, like Cichlids, cohabit with calm and defenseless fish or fish with long sails, which might find themselves permanently persecuted and will not swim quickly to flee. The males of some species, like fighters, can never live together, instead they’d get into deadly fights.
